3D Laser Scanning Projects – Point Clouds/High Definition Mesh
Point Clouds/High Definition Mesh
Point clouds are sets of individual points defined by X, Y, and Z coordinates. With the 3D Laser Scanner data capturing over 200,000 points per second, the large number of points on each surface that are spaced closely together creates the point cloud. By then using each point as a set of vertices and connecting each with a vector, the result is a set of triangular faces. When the point cloud density is high, the resulting set of triangular faces over the project area creates the high definition mesh.
The point cloud is used for measurement and visualization of the scanned object. Dimensions and/or coordinates can quickly be measured directly from any feature point within the parameters of the point cloud. Photos can also be placed on the surface of the mesh to produce a color textured surface capable of being exported into CAD systems for further use.
